Hello Visionalez', archiving your vinyl (8 tracks and cassettes, too) can be done several ways. I'm still forming an opinion on the Hawkins thing from the posts here and at the Daily Newz so will reserve comments on that for now. I'm still with Garrett on the Noise Ordinance 100% and hope the city doesn't have a big can-o-worms pop open from that one. Please don't come bustin' down my door if you here me jamming out the Star Spangled Banner ala' Hendrix style. Hendrix himself looked puzzeled when Dick Cavett asked him on live Tv what his motives and point were in performing the song that way to wit Jimi replied: "In what way? I thought it was beautiful." The live audience went nuts with applause. Let this be a reminder of what happens when we assume we know what anyone else is about.<BR>

Anyway here's a few options for saving that vinyl for future generations:<BR>

1: If your record player has stereo audio RCA outputs on the back, your computer just needs a capture card device, if none is built in you can buy a USB plug & play capture card for $25 on Ebay that will capture from VCR, DVR, camcorder, cassette deck, etc, etc. One can be seen here: <BR>

Be careful because phono inputs and outputs are at a different signal than RCA line level stereo inputs and outputs though they look the exact same, most stereo's stopped including the phono input option probably around 1990. You could even use a headphone output on the record player with a cheap convertor from 1/4" headphone jack to stereo RCA's but will need to adjust the incoming signal by using the volume control on the record player or by an input level setting in your capture/editing software.<BR>

Another specific option that has recently come out is an actual record player with a built in USB connection that allows for archiving vinyl records only but helps Dj's mix custom scratches straight to their recording software. As always, you pay for convenience, so this option is a little more expensive (about $120 for the playa') but would be more user friendly for the non-techno bunch who is not interested in archiving any other media formats, like old VHS tapes where the USB capture device above or a built in one to your PC would be very useful.<BR>

Here's one of those Crosley retro replicas that even now has a USB output built in! When shopping these replica's make sure to read the descriptions carefully because the lesser models may have a CD and cassette built in but with no stereo RCA line level outputs (or now even USB) it can only be used as a player in your family room and not for recording from.<BR>
