<div>As you point out, and D. Sarff's web link to the thinker writing on propaganda amplifies, modern consumer capitalism is very much dependent on manipulation of and control over the public. In fact, needs that don't exist must be manufactured to keep the system growing. The consumer thus does not control what survives in the marketplace due to purchases made according to a calculus of independent free agency. They are manipulated into buying what they are told they need via the manufacture of desire for images created by advertising. Children now recognize corporate brand names as young as 3-4 years old:
