Thanks to Bruce and everyone else for the wonderful
Rendezvous nights. Mavis was indescribable--an unforgettable segment, but
others were good, and even the ones that weren't my genre were popular with
others. Good work. And thanks so much for the emphasis on at least
one female artist.

Not to be lost in the buzz about the impending
arrival of soul and gospel legend Mavis Staples at Rendezvous in the Park on
Saturday night July21, two outstanding bands will be playing Rendezvous on
Friday night July 20. See details below.

Chico California's Mother Hips (
http://www.motherhips.com/ ) are one of America's great
but under-rated rock-n-roll bands, having captivated California for more than
15 years. Imagine a west coast Wilco, with harmonies.
Despite extended stints of "road warrior"-style touring and promotion of their
fine albums throughout the 1990s through 2001's "the Green Hills of the
Earth," they never achieved commercial success on a scale to achieve
national prominence in the Billboard charts. In 2005, Rolling Stone
hailed their return to recording after a four-year lay-off, with
their EP, "Red Tandy": <A

The success of "Red Tandy," re-invigorated the Hips and
quickly got them back to the studio for a full length release.
They are touring this year in support of their
outstanding new album, "Kiss the Crystal Flake," released in the spring
of 2007. The Hips assert
they're neither a jam band nor a country rock band, notwithstanding their
touring and the Byrds comparisons. Jambase throws in
the Beatles, when discussing the Hips' song-writing, which they characterize
as: "the fundamentals are in place – indestructible songwriting paired with
skilled, enthusiastic playing and a good ear for tiny embellishments that etch
a tune in someone's mind." <A

Rolling Stone magazine merely noted the Hips were
inspired by the four great American "B's," the Sixties icons, the Byrds,
Buffalo Springfield, the Band, and the Beach Boys.
