Hayes wasn't actually killed in action, his story seems well worth
remembering on Memorial Day.</font></blockquote>

just one of thousands of stories of veterans who were praised as
heroes, but then forgotten and ignored---with tragic
consequences---when the fighting was over.</font></blockquote>
