The majority -- the great majority -- of people I worked with who lacked papers paid into the system through taxes on the purchases they made in the community, not to mention their benefit to the companies that employed them. Acknowledging the obvious -- that we have a largely underground workforce that is not being taxed fully, commensurate to their work in the economy -- would seem to demand that we legalize them. And to the extent that my taxes have gone to pay for medical care, education, and food for poor people, please don't pity me.
