My prayers and thoughts are with Moscow tonight.

I am not sure how many subscribers to V2020 know who Paul Bauer was but fortunately I got to know him when I was working for Latah County. He was employed by the county within its maintenance department from September 2001 through early 2003. Many an evening I would buy him a round or two at the small bar within the Mark IV or give him and his ailing wife a ride to the doctors or Wal-Mart.

Paul was orginally from New York but saw a lot of our nation while serving in the US Navy. He was a fireman aboard the USS Forrestal during the Vietnam war and was one of many heros who helped rescue crewman and aviators during the Forrestal's tragic fire in July of 1967. Seaman Bauer was awarded a medal for his actions that night, he was credited with saving the lives of individuals. Unfortunately, I cannot recall the medal. When the History Channel runs their program about the fire, Paul can be seen carrying hose down a staircase near one of the flight deck elevators.

After his service for our nation Paul and his wife settled in Oakland, CA. He was a great football fan and really loved his Raiders. Being from New York he was also a fan of the Bills, but when the AFC was on the line he was pure Raider Nation. For as long as I knew Paul he wore a pretty beat up Raiders cap with a lot of pride. Paul and his wife moved to Moscow in the 1990's starting their lives over again after working in the Bay Area. Paul was a tremendous machinist and welder within the Alemeda Shipyards. When the Navy closed the shipyard Paul and his wife were on the way back to New York when a wrong turn placed them in Moscow. Paul worked several jobs while enjoying life on the Palouse. Paul's wife passed away around 2003 within their partment.

Paul's huge smile was a feature I will never forget. I last saw him at the Mark IV right after Phil Nisbet's funeral, he had gotten to know Phil and they shared more than on beer as well.

Paul, thanks for being a friend and I know you are enjoying the afterlife.
