Archie's Discriminates Against People with
Disabilities!</SPAN></I><BR>Date: <I><SPAN style="FONT-STYLE: italic">Tue, 27 Mar 2007 17:06:11 -0700</SPAN></I><BR>I'm sending this out to as many people as I can in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Moscow</st1:place></st1:City>. A student in my Intro to Disability Studies class shared this story about an experience her father had in Archie's restaurant last week. Please read it, pass this on to others you know. <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Moscow</st1:place></st1:City> is not a community that should support this kind of behavior:<BR><BR>" My parents were care providers for a man with Severe Mental Retardation for about 7 years. They knew he was ready to move on after about 5 years and it took 2 years of battling with his service coordinators and the state of Idaho and receiving empty
promises that finally my parents set everything up for him themselves. Under threat from the state and everything else, my dad got him an apartment, set up with 24-hour support, set up all of his financial supports, etc. This young man is doing fine. He’s happier being more independent and having his own space and making a lot of his own choices. He and my dad formed a relationship naturally and so my dad visits, calls, and takes him out to lunch or breakfast pretty frequently.<BR><BR>Last Wednesday, I think it was, my dad picked up D. to take him out to breakfast. My dad hadn’t yet tried Archie’s on the Square, so they went there. The restaurant was empty except for one other couple. The hostess told them to pick a seat wherever they liked. The chef or cook was standing next to the table where the other couple was eating chatting about whether the liked the food and whatnot. D. is a
very friendly man and will usually greet pretty much everyone he passes. And he attempted to do just that. As he walked by, D. said “Hi.” (Hi is one of the few words D says). Immediately and angrily, the chef turned to my dad and told him to, “get control of this guy!” My dad was very taken aback, but realized that perhaps the chef didn’t appreciate being interrupted. My dad and D. sat down at a table, when the chef left the table of the other couple, walked over to my dad’s table. He pointed directly at D and shouted, “You’re bad for my business, Bud!” then walked to the kitchen.<BR><BR>My dad was shocked by the hostile behavior and in all his years with my sister and working with people with disabilities had actually never experienced behavior quite that rude. They left Archie’s and went to the Breakfast Club which was packed and very friendly. Later when my dad got home he decided he
would call Archie’s to complain to the owner. He called and spoke to the hostess who said she remembered them, but said that the owner couldn’t talk to them and that the chef actually was the owner. My dad told the hostess he was considering writing a letter to editor about their treatment, so the owner came to the phone. My dad explained to the owner that he had come in earlier with a disabled man to have breakfast and that he had never experience such rude behavior. The owner got very angry and responded, “For all I know he could’ve been drunk! If he’s retarded then he should wear a F***ing sign around his neck!” And then he told my dad to go ahead and write a letter to the editor and slammed the phone down.<BR><BR>This really upset my dad, understandably so. It makes me angry too, because this is not the <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Moscow</st1:place></st1:City> I have
experienced. I also know that the owners of Archie’s moved here recently (read in the Daily News last summer, I believe). My dad of course is not going to let this go, but really doesn’t know what action to take. After reading NO PITY, I am all charged up about this as well. What is wrong with people? Luckily, or not, D really didn’t know what happened, but the owner of Archie’s didn’t know that. I can’t imagine that this is an isolated incident.<BR><BR>Follow Up: The situation has since escalated. My dad and a handful of others protested outside of Archie's on Sunday carrying signs saying something like, "Archie's discriminates against people with disabilites," etc. The owner or Archie's meanwhile stood inside the restaurant flipping off the protesters and encouraged them to return often to increase his business. Interestingly, the waitress had harsh words for the protesters as well. My
dad said she told him that the reason the owner didn't know D had disabilities was because he's from <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">California</st1:place></st1:State> and "they don't have people like that." She also shared that people "like that" are not supposed to get out of you reach when you take them out to public places. She later was a little more friendly--needed the job, just got hired, had kids...<BR><BR>Anyway, I guess a larger group will be returning on Sunday again (<st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Moscow</st1:place></st1:City> loves a good protest). And my dad will be on the radio tonight at 7:30 on 92.5 KFRP."<BR><BR>Please, let's not condone this kind of discrimination in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Moscow</st1:place></st1:City>. Pass this on to anyone you know who may eat at Archie's. We don't allow this behavior in our
