You would think that if any one group wanted Moscow's Mardi Gras to thrive, it would be the Moscow Arts Commission. The whole reason behind our Mardi Gras was to further and benefit art here on the Palouse.

If I was to name any one person at the UI, I would say David Giese. Dr. Nick already mentioned the huge undertaking of the beautiful milk carton floats. You have to understand, they were huge. . sometimes bigger than a bus. . . and they almost looked like ivory. They were a similar color. Amazing works of very temporary art. . . but still art in my book.

On the business end, I would have to say Charlotte Buchanan, owner of a wonderful little eclectic shop called "One More Time", was the driving force for the downtown merchants. I think she was also the "glue" that helped bind the UI and the downtown. Mardi Gras started to unravel the year after she left town. You can see it in the old posters. . . it was like they "forgot" to make a poster and that first year without Charlotte the poster is a thrown together collage of black and white pictures of past Mardi Gras celebrations.

What would it take to revive Moscow Mardi Gras? Very hard work. Communication between ALL businesses. . . not just bars. Business needs to understand that we NEED the UI to flourish and there has to be cooperation and communication between the two.

As a relative newcomer to town, having only been here ten years, what was special and "better" about "the Mardi Gras of old"? Who organized it? What was done differently? And actually, what is it like now, not ever having gone out to it. My sense is that it is a night when live music is available all over town, and that does not seem like a bad thing, so why is it sometimes characterized as now being just a "drunk fest"?

This thought that "Mardi Gras is no longer as good as it once was" is a complaint/regret that I have heard more than a few times in the last five years, and I wonder how the "Mardi Gras of old" might be revived. It is a fond memory for numbers of people.

I am on the Moscow Arts Commission, and though I have just stepped down as chair as of last month, an effort to revive Mardi Gras might find support on the Commission, particularly if other citizens wanted to participate and help. A vibrant Mardi

Moscow always has Mardi Gras on the first Saturday in March. It's not much of an event anymore. . . maybe that's why no one can remember when it is. I haven't seen any posters around town with the exception of The Beach advertising the wet T-shirt contest on it's readerboard. Sad that a fun, annual family event has been allowed to deteriorate into no more than a drunken frenzy.

Dare I even mention that the Mardi Gras of old was REALLY good for business. Not just bar business.
