Here's one problem in short: Do people honestly state their political
affiliations when responding to polls?<br>
<br>
I never respond to polls myself because they frequently are devices to
gain and sell personal information to a wide variety of organizations.<br>
<br>
I remember, however, receiving email from some right-wing organization
that someone signed me up for. Several times the emails requested that
I respond to polls in a certain way, most of the time to give a very
deceptive twist to the result. I remember one on the character of
Ollie North. I was requested to give him high marks but also identify
myself as a veteran, democrat, and highly educated.<br>

Polls are easily manipulated, hence I have little confidence in them.
It takes a very naive person to believe that the information you give
is confidential, hence answers are not also truthful. It does not take
a smart person long to figure out how to skew the answers so as to
influence the results in a manipulative way.<br>
<br>
There are also problems with attention, understanding, interest in a
long survey over the telephone. In context, some people might not
understand exactly what is being asked -- what success is being talked
about -- in congress or in Iraq.<br>

What is the correspondence of the numbers on this poll with other polls
asking similar questions? <br>
<br>
Nowhere in the information provided is any methodology given: How were
the initial callees selected? How many did not answer the phone or how
many refused to answer before the desired number 0f 900 responses was
reached?<br>

Other than a reference to Fox News, does anyone have the URL of the
poll originally posted (not the answers, but the polling question(s))?
Perhaps we can learn something of the context and methodology that
might further aid this discussion.<br>

which it was asked, that the meaning is "do you want the Iraq plan
President Bush announced to succeed *in Congress*." The answer to that
question, for the vast majority of Democrats, is "no."
