If we were to trust rationale alone, Bill, we would vote purely from a candidate's platform. That would leave us to trust that and that alone.

Why is it, when reading law enforcement articles on avoiding dangerous situations, they almost always state "Trust your gut"? If something doesn't "feel" right, its probably not.

The same thing applies to politics. A lot can be learned by watching public figures in action, in person. How they treat those that disagree with them, how they interact one on one. People do too much looking at candidates, rather than actually watching them. A quick flash of anger when challenged here, a fleeting moment of uncertainy there. Its all there if one watches, rather than looks. These are things you can't really see on tv.

As most of you know, I am often at public meetings. I watch people constantly, including those in the audience. I can usually tell within minutes where a person stands on an issue. Without them saying a word.

Then there is that other intangible, charisma. I now understand how some politicians can get such a large base.

Gary Hart is one such person. The man has the ability to absolutely mesmerize. Even I had moments when I caught myself being caught up during a Q&A session last fall.

So, what's better? Rationale or gut instict? We know for a fact that campaign platforms are essentialy worthless, at least in national politics, so rationale can't be trusted. We know that many politicians will say what they think you want to hear to get your vote, so merely listening to them can't be trusted.

What's left?

Gut instinct.

I think this discussion about the criteria of candidate selection is really fascinating, especially since we have witnessed the election of so many candidates who do not represent the best interests of their constituents. These candidates have been chosen on some basis other than rationality.

On that subject, I suggest the book "Applegate's America" (at the Moscow Library), written by 3 experts in PR, including one who worked for Clinton in 1996 and one who worked for Bush in 2004.

The core of the Bush election analysis was that the Bush campaign was able to convince independent and former Democratic voters to ignore the rational arguments for electing Kerry (these voters were against the war, did not want laws against abortion, etc) and go with what the authors called their "gut reaction." Similar to Kai's "gut instinct."

The Bush campaign was able to create an image that mirrors what Kai describes as his feelings about Brady/Otter. The image was that Bush was a strong leader, that you might not like what he was doing but you trusted him to lead -- and that therefore Bush will keep you safe.

The good news is that in Idaho, voters can actually interact with candidates and watch how the candidate works a room. What I would say to that is that the personal qualities of politicians working a crowd may not reflect the quality of their potential as leaders.

Sue, you can be absolutely assured that I will never, I repeat, never run for office.

As for supporting "conservative issues", I came out in support of Moscow building a new high school, I don't believe it is the government's business what happens between consenting adults in the privacy of their own homes and I believe stem cell research is needed. Oh yeah, I listen to NPR regularly and love the arts. (I married my first wife on the main stage of the Spokane Civic Theatre, where I was active, both onstage and off for many years.)

Hmmmmmm, pretty conservative, huh?

It IS true that I support stemming the flow of illegal immigrants, support the right to bear arms, small government and believe in the personal responsibilty that goes hand in hand with personal freedom.

Above all, I believe in the right of free speech. What disconcerts me, is the fact that I see both conservatives AND liberals that would love to silence any opposing speech. (Recent events at WSU come to mind.)

It scares the hell out of me when people vote for a party, not a candidate. Maybe basing, in part, my choice on a handshake isn't the best, but it's a heck of a lot better than basing it on advertising. Words on a page describing a candidates platform, don't convey a sense of "who" that candidate is. In the end it comes down to one's own "gut instinct".

Sheesh....sort of reminds me of my grandfather who wouldn't vote for Roosevelt because he was a "cripple" then later wouldn't vote for Adlai Stevenson because a "divorced man is living proof he can't even manage his family." Given your propensity to support conservative issues why not just be straightforward as you usually are? If you ever run for office I promise you my vote for the opposition won't be because you smoke.
