man

Multnomah
County Sheriff’s deputies with a sonar camera are expected to search Tuesday for
a man who jumped or fell into the John Day River on Sunday after he stopped at
the scene of a traffic accident on Interstate 84 at the John Day
Bridge.
Sherman County Sheriff Brad Lohrey said
the team was due to arrive this morning (after press deadlines). The equipment
they use can be put into the water to take pictures of the bottom of the river.
He said it has been successful in finding bodies in the Portland
area.
The actual search on the shoreline of the
river for the body of John Dickinson, of Moscow, Idaho, has been suspended, the
sheriff said.
Troopers from the Oregon State
Police and deputies from the Sherman County had actively searched the area since
daybreak Monday and no sign of Dickinson was found, Sgt. Julie Wilcox of the OSP
office in The Dalles said.
A dive team from Skamania County was called in to
assist, but because of the depth and turbidity of the John Day River, the divers
could not deploy to search. The depth of the river in the area of the crash was
83 to 105 feet and the surface water temperature is 38 to 40
degrees.
Police said Dickinson, 62, stopped his
car Sunday evening behind another car that had swerved to avoid debris on an
Interstate 84 bridge east of The Dalles, struck a center divider and came to
rest in the driving lane.
Dickinson got out of
his car, which a third car then struck from behind, the police
said.
Troopers said Dickinson couldn’t be found
at the scene of the accidents.
Dickinson is a City Council member in Moscow
and was recently named its president.
