The main reason that I prefer top-posted replies is that I get to skip
reading the replies I've already read again and again as the chain of
replies continues. I also hate having to scroll down to the bottom of
a lengthy email exchange to get a one-line reply.

Read the reply. Then, if you didn't catch the references scroll down
and get caught up on what you might have missed. The really proper way
is probably more like what Chasuk described, but I'm often too lazy to
cut out everything in a long email except what I want to reply to.
Anyway, people are different and you won't please everybody no matter
the system.
Ralph, the diacritical marks appear finely, enhancing reading enjoyment.
I can not resist adding that what would add reading ease, as well as reading
enjoyment, to the entire Vision 2020 list would be replies to posts written
in messages after the message to which a post is a reply.
The usual present case, for example:
A: Because it disturbs the normal flow of reading a text.
Q: Why is top-posting an e-mail reply undesirable and inconsiderate?
The desired future case, for example:
Q: Why is top-posting an e-mail reply undesirable and inconsiderate?
A: Because it disturbs the normal flow of reading a text.
Ralph, please understand I am not singling out your post particularly,
though your parenthetical remark provided an acceptable segue. Reading ease
and enjoyment of the entire Vision 2020 list would be enhanced without the
common present practice of top-posting.
