Which future victims are we talking about? The guy's cellmates? We
can't know the future. Try this one on for size: what if one of the
people that we've executed wrongly in the past 50 years would have
found an inexpensive cure for cancer if he hadn't been locked up and
his life taken away from him.<br>

But that's beside the point. My main point is that we know that
killing others is wrong, because we are trying to punish murderers for
it. So why stoop to their level? Why not take the high road and just
lock them up for life? I don't care if they brood about their
wrongdoings for years or just don't give a crap, but at least they are
removed from society where they can (hopefully) do little harm.<br>

If someone is in horrible pain 24/7 with no hope of recovery and you
have their fully-informed consent, then maybe a "merciful killing" is
justified. But don't hang someone because you're afraid of what they
might do someday if they could find a way to escape. Thats just
rationalizing some need for vengeance, in my opinion.<br>

Like being stone-cold, barbaric, emotionless, revengeful killers is something to aspire to. Me, I'll stick to trying to treat people humanely, *despite* what they might or might not deserve.
While I have no doubt about his guilt in this particular case, I'm also against the death penalty because of all the innocent people we keep finding we've put to death as a country based on DNA evidence. I haven't always thought this way, but every time I hear about another death penalty case where the wrong man or woman was convicted I sway towards the idea of life in prison without parole despite the cost.
