I find my self in agreement with the court system here.</FONT></DIV>

that releasing them is a mistake. Coe is a classic example of that kind of
re-offender: a sexual predator who has shown no remorse or empathy or awareness
and no willingness to engage in therapy.</FONT></DIV>

key" idea? Why don't we just kill them? Just shoot them in the
head as we drag them out of the courthouse amidst the crowd noises and in
front of the cameras? Better yet, let the victims do it.<BR><BR>Isn't 25 years
in jail and a permanent charge of multiple counts of felony rape on your
record and being a registered sex offender enough? Should we have been
beating Kevin Coe soundly the whole time or shocking him with electrodes or
waterboarding him? <BR><BR>If you don't believe in our justice system
then we might as well be going after people with torches and pitchforks.
How much has our society spent keeping just that one man in prison for 25
years? How much did we spend on the trial? Wouldn't it be better
for everyone if he was let out and given a chance to become a benefit to our
society rather than a drain upon it?<BR><BR>I am not unsympathetic to the
victims of his crimes. These issues don't have only one side and life is
not black or white. We can't simply have him un-rape them and be done
with it. We have to work within the constraints we have. Isn't it
possible that 25 years in prison while being known to the world as a rapist is
enough to teach someone not to reoffend? Are you certain that the
victims of his crimes didn't move on with their lives a decade

fools WILL commit crimes again - the only "service to society" they have
done was to reside in a state-sanctioned institution....with others of their
ilk. They are free to talk to these others and are verra open to how others
have done things; i.e., they will leave there a bit more "educated" on how
to commit their crimes and either avoid detection completely or at least for
a while. No matter what, they WILL reoffend and they WILL "sentence" other
women/children to a lifetime of hell.
The commitment has NOTHING to do with HIS sanity but everything to do with
protecting society. If Coe/Sitler get out, they will, will, will reoffend.
Leaving him in jail or in an institution is the only way to protect SOCIETY
in general from their monstrous acts. Forget "their" sanity.
Sitler was charged with a FRACTION of the crimes he *admits* to committing -
he molests children. He does it because he likes it. Period. His type of
crime does not just go away when he "gets a second chance" it just moves
from one town to his next one, IF he is allowed to get out. This guy has
cases in several states...it is only in Idaho that he was charged. Think he
won't travel and start over again? *THINK* again.
Same thing with Coe. Just because he got caught and charged with one or two
cases does not mean he did not commit others. Or that he won't again.
Sexual offenders do what they do because people continue to "give them
second chances" to do them.
A person KNOWN to have committed several rapes of women or children needs to
stay in jail. Period. I can tell you the people these creeps assaulted
would sleep better knowing they are there and it goes a long way towards
healing the victim.
You seem to have forgotten the victim in your "debt to society". Hopefully
you will not be forced to put them first in your mind due to one of your's
becoming a victim at the hands of one of these "second chance" guys.
Don't forget - Joseph Duncan was a "second chance" parolee.

I realize you're basically just getting in another dig at Sitler, but I'd
like to look at this a bit more.
Kevin Coe has paid his "debt to society", or will have soon. The question
now is whether or not he needs to be committed for his own mental sanity.
I don't know anything about McNeil Island, but I imagine that he is being
studied to see if he is fit to return to normal life, or to see if he is a
danger to himself or others from a mental-stability standpoint.
He was caught, tried, convicted, and served his time. He deserves the
chance to start over, as best he can. That's the foundation of our justice
system, if you don't agree with it than you might as well just execute
everyone who does so much as get a ticket for jay-walking.
If I were him, I'd get the hell out of the Northwest. He'll still be on
the Sex Offenders list, which will be a good thing for those in his new
community, but maybe he'll have less extra crap flung at him somewhere
else.
I don't know about the Sitler case, I've heard so much ranting and raving
about it here that I couldn't tell you if he was a saint or Satan, but if
he was sentenced by a court of law he should be given the ability to
reenter normal life after he's served his time without people taking it
upon themselves to make his new life any more of a living hell.
I guess my main question is: don't people deserve second chances?

Does this not sound like Sitler being allowed to go outside the jail for
"treatment" until his parole in May 2007? When did things change to where
the criminal is allowed to dictate his sentence or place of incarceration?
