<html><div style='background-color:'><DIV class=RTE>1. Forget the idea that the death penalty is a deterent. It was never was and was not meant to be. The death penalty is a PUNISHMENT. It is meant to be be society's expression that there are some crime so heiness (sp?) that the one who committed them must be killed.</DIV>
<DIV class=RTE>2. Most people can understand, if not forgive, crimes of passion. Ie: jealous wife kills husband's mistress and/or husband. Most cannot understand people like John Wayne Gace and other serial murderers. They were coniving cold blood killers with no conscience and no remorse. They and many others like them are proof that pure evil does exist in this world.</DIV>
<DIV class=RTE>The death penalty acclomplishes two things:</DIV>
<DIV class=RTE>A: It deals out punishment for the crime(s) committed.</DIV>
<DIV class=RTE>B: It ensures public safety by provided zero chance that the convicted can escape and wreak more havoc on society. A life sentence gives the convicted a chance, however small, to attack again, whether it be on a guard or on the public.</DIV>
<DIV class=RTE> </DIV>
<DIV class=RTE>That said, I think the life sentence for Moussaoui, who viewes himself a martyr, was the correct one. In his case, a life in supermax is a punishment worse than death. He will die in a hard, grey cell, hopefully forgotten by society.</DIV>
