Well, during MY college days, I was the Vice President of Community Service for the Greek community at UI, and it was my duty to coordinate campus wide crossing guard duty in the a.m., and in the afternoon on the main crosswalks between family housing and West Park/bus stops, particularly crossing Sweet Avenue at Deakin. Granted these are busy streets, but "inexperienced" young drivers at the wheel usually weren't much of a problem at 7:30-8:00 a.m. and again at the end of the school day. They DID have school as well. As a campus resident, and others may agree, the traffic on campus is relatively slow until 4:00-7:00 p.m. It is not just young children drivers are avoiding, as the majority of campus residents are also foot traffic. Many kids attending MY elementary school, McDonald, had to cross Mt.
View. Kids on their way to Russell have to cross D street, I see them everyday waiting at crosswalks. I think there are plenty of problems and issues in our school district to have bring up foot travel en route to school.
