You are right in your claim that people cannot prevent others from practicing religion on public property. This whole Trinity Fest thing has nothing to do with UI preventing someone from practicing religion. It has more to do with the process by which Trinity and other controversial events are scheduled and eventually take place on campus. My argument all along against UI's allowance of Trinity is that student input was not solicited and that key people involved with negotiation of scheduling this event may have been influenced innapropriately.

Trinity is one example of a religous organization utilizing campus facilities. There are many religous groups on campus and many more that come from off campus that practice or preach on campus year round. However, most, if not all, of these groups are prohibited from open areas within certain buildings. As established by the UI administraton, there are established free speech zones. The controversial, radical, southern style preacher who comes to campus every year would never be allowed inside any of the buildings on campus to preach his hateful views. As it stands now with Trinity, the same does not apply. Doug Wilson, Steve Wilkins, and Peter Leihart are being allowed to use a UI building to preach hate, that is just plain wrong.

To many people have theiir hands in to many pies in this town and wear numerous official hats. There is bound to be a conflict of interest in a town of 10,000. Had Doug Wilson and CC been held to the same standard as the crazy guy who comes to campus every year, Trinity would more than likely not be taking place. Had student been informed prior to the scheduling of this event, Trinity probably would not take place. Had the UI administration kept their promise to the community made after the February history conference, we would not see Trinity fest next week.

There are a lot more variables that what I just mentioned that may have influenced a different decision by UI concerning Trinity fest. Lots of things need to change in order for UI to save face and prevent future negative imagery that is associated with CC/Wilson/Wilkins etc and their ties to UI.
