Before I get started: I APOLOGIZE. . . . TO EVERYONE!!

Now that's over with, let's get down to the nitty-gritty.

Some time ago I read Lois Blackburn's letter and thought, "Wow, I can't believe she had the guts to put those thoughts down on paper and then go public with them!"

After I read this post I thought maybe I should go back and check things out one more time. . . . So I did. I read it over again. . . and again. Then I asked four of my employees to read it and tell me in their own words what they understood from her letter.

Guess what. . . we are all confused. . . and apparently we need to be set straight.

The first couple paragraphs are introduction and not very remarkable. In the third, however, she makes the statement that the UI gives the "appearance" of sponsoring the event. Further, her concern is that the UI is putting an entire segment of the university population "at risk". She doesn't identify which segment is her special concern and it is unclear who is "at risk".

In paragraph #4 Lois lets everyone know Doug Wilson has made outspoken statements regarding homosexuals which were part of a published interview is the local paper, the Daily News. In the interview he states that homosexuals should be killed or exiled or inflicted with "other punishments."

Then she goes on with a new paragraph where she details a meeting of the Gay-Straight Alliance which was attended by two of Doug Wilson's young members from Christ Church. She states that the members felt "very much afraid" and reported the incident after the meeting.

In paragraph # 6 she states they had good reason to be afraid.

What follows next is info regarding the disappearance of a college student who was known to be a homosexual. She states that his body was found in a remote area with all evidence pointing to homicide.

She comes right out and says she is "horrified" that other students will meet the same fate as Wil and she requests that the UI cancel all agreements to rent facilities to Doug Wilson.

The way I read the letter, it was all about involvement. . . . cold calculated involvement with the possibility of more to come.

Now, since I've already apologized up front. . . and I try very hard to be decent. . . will someone please set me straight. What is REALLY meant by Lois Blackburn's letter?

I also bet that Phil
>dislikes Lois and the MCA and Intoleristas enough to suspend
>rational review of their writings, discussions, and behaviors to
>instead weave a tale much more incendiary.
>
>And yes, I have also engaged, and continue to engage, with many from
>the Kirk. Before I ever publicly denounced Doug Wilson, I wrote
to
>him privately, asking for a meeting. We had one, during which I
>found him polite, charming, and utterly disingenuous about the
>source and consequence of his teachings. I'll continue to confront
>him and others who act as he does, just as I'll continue to wish
>them well personally and enjoy the occasional caffeine-fueled
>theological debate that happens. IN this case, though, I don't see
>how wishing them well can succeed apart from humility and grace on
>my part and repentance, reformation, and reconciliation on theirs --
>just like I've left some bad behavior behind through adopting the
>three Rs for myself, encouraged by the humility and grace of others.
>
>I believe you owe Lois an apology, but I won't hold my breath.
>
>keely emerine
