Donovan says:
". . . the student has no other choice but to put it on the credit card
and try to pay it off with a part-time job."

Actually, the student does have other choices. I don't know about anyone else, but there is no way I had a credit card at age 18 that would give me that high of a balance. As many students discover, the financial aid process thought my parents had a whole lot more money to give me for school than they actually did....so I met with a financial aid advisor and applied for commercial student loans, higher interest than I pay on my federal loans, but not much more. I may be biased saying this, but if mommy and daddy give you a credit card to pay for your housing, etc, than maybe you don't need financial aid to start with.

And, as Dan said, maybe you might have to....OH NO!...get a job. They have a student and temporary employment office for that reason. Or you might actually have to work half time or more, like I did, to make ends meet. If you think this leaves no time for student activities, well...i was very active, and held many offices during my time at UI and also fit student teaching into the schedule. Sure beats a huge credit card bill when I got out of school. And yes, I also graduated in 4 years.

Pretty much, I don't think charging a small percentage is that big of a deal. Hey...you could always pay with your Vandal Card!! There's a nice little debit account.

Oh NO!! You mean students might have to WORK?!?! The HORROR!!

I don't know about you, but I found the Financial Aid process such a
pain in the arse prior to my freshman year that I decided it would be
easier to have a part time job to pay for school. Yeah, it was back a
while ago (seems like it gets longer ago every year), but it can still
be done. Heck, if you work your schedule right, you can dang near pull
down full time hours. And you can still graduate in 4 years.

Class of '91

DC
