Visionaries,

This is a difficult day for many people at the University of
Idaho. Many loyal employees who have endured years without pay
raises, decreasing medical benefits. and increased work loads are receiving
pink slips. I am outraged that these people are being made to pay the
price for the greedy senior administrative architects of an self-aggrandizing
scheme to expand the University's power base. The villains in this piece
remain free and apparently will not be held accountable for their crimes
- a literally nauseating example of the Old Boys Network protecting
its own. But that's not the worst of it. In last night's Daily
News in the public news section I noted the following request for bid: (edited
for brevity)

ADVERTISEMENT FOR BIDS Page 2 of 2
A4B_ArtifTurfProj
DESCRIPTION OF
WORK: This project consists of site preparation for the installation of
approximately 104,500 S.F. of Tufted Infill Synthetic Turf. Two Filled
Artificial Turf Multi-Use Fields are scheduled for construction at the
University of Idaho during the spring and summer of 2005, with completion of
infill synthetic turf installation by July 30, 2005 (under separate contract).
The successful bidder will be responsible for coordination of installation of
the turf as well as construction of the field base, sub-drainage system, turf
edging, anchoring and other construction details as required by the turf
manufacturer. Periodic inspection and acceptance of work by the turf vendor is
required during preparation for the turf system
installation as deemed
necessary by the turf manufacturer.
Generally, the earthwork for the fields
will include stripping and exporting the top 4” of sod and topsoil from the
field area and additional excavation of approximately 6” of existing sub-grade.
The prepared base will
consist of compacted sub-grade, sub drain system, a
geotextile fabric, 4” of compacted ¾ minus rock with 2” of compacted ¼” minus
rock leveling course for preparation of the infill product to be provided and
installed
by others. Electrical work includes field lighting, consisting of
eight (8) galvanized 50-foot round tapered steel poles with flood lighting and
associated electrical control. Other ancillary improvements to the fields
include a 14’ x 24’ concrete block storage building, chain link and
wrought
iron style fencing, brick gate pilasters w/precast caps and wrought iron style
gates, concrete flat work, concrete pavers, new goal posts, concrete steps and
handrails, landscaping and irrigation.
ESTIMATED COST: $640,000.00.
Signed
by:
Jay Kenton, Vice President Finance and Administration
UNIVERSITY OF

What kind of priorities have been established at the University of Idaho
that endorse saving money by laying off employees and cutting academic
programs while concurrently spending $640,000 on two outdoor practice
fields with wrought iron fencing and gates. Something is sadly awry at UI
- where turf gets laid and employees get screwed.
