<DIV>Lupke and Hooks, both faculty members at WSU, will explain their views on the proposed Pullman Wal-Mart Super Center and respond to any questions listeners may have. </DIV>

<P class=MsoBodyTextIndent style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face=Times><EM>The Pullman Alliance for Responsible Development [http://pullman-ard.org], is an organization formed recently by ordinary members of the community to spearhead opposition to the building of a <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Wal-Mart</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType>Supercenter</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> in <st1:City><st1:place>Pullman</st1:place></st1:City> and to pursue instead smart, responsible and balanced growth.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>PARD opposes the Wal-Mart Supercenter for many reasons, some of which are:<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN></EM></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoBodyTextIndent style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face=Times><EM><SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>(1) The apparent lack of thought and planning in choosing a site that is unsustainable for the building of a shopping complex of such magnitude.</EM></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoBodyTextIndent style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face=Times><EM> (2) The lack of consumer options that this enormous new store will bring given the fact that a Wal-Mart already exists a mere eight miles away; </EM></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoBodyTextIndent style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face=Times><EM>(3) The potential damage to local businesses in downtown Pullman and other already established businesses, given the fragile economic climate of the area;</EM></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoBodyTextIndent style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face=Times><EM> (4) The negative impact that Wal-Mart will have on wages and public services in the community. </EM></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoBodyTextIndent style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face=Times><EM>(5) Unfair and illegal trade practices such as the pricing of food products below wholesale; </EM></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoBodyTextIndent style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face=Times><EM>(6) The exploitation of third world factory workers in such countries as China and the wholesale exportation of manufacturing jobs out of the United States.</EM></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoBodyTextIndent style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face=Times><EM> (7) Discrimination against women seeking promotion to management positions which has now embroiled Wal-Mart in the largest class-action lawsuit (1.6 million plaintiffs) in United States history.</EM></FONT></P>
