is always cause for celebration. Tomorrow morning we will honor the
achievements of more than 800 students at the December Commencement ceremony in
the Kibbie Dome. Literally thousands of family members and friends will gather
to see their loved ones receive their degrees - bachelor's, master's, doctoral
and military commissions. Every single graduate has a story to tell about the
trials and triumphs of the educational process, but let me share a couple of
special stories. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-autospace:none'><font size=2 face="Courier New"><span
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-autospace:none'><font size=2 face="Courier New"><span
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>For Tony Kiel, this holiday
season brings him a double degree in English and history from the <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Idaho</st1:PlaceName></st1:place>, a new son or daughter within a
month, and culmination of a proud college football career. The student athlete
from <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Cupertino</st1:City>, <st1:State
w:st="on">Calif.</st1:State></st1:place>, started every football game this
year as a left or right guard, and his coach, Jason Eck, says he's been "a
real mentor to new guys on the team." Tony says he came to <st1:State
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Idaho</st1:place></st1:State> for a chance to
play Division I-1A football. He ended with a double degree in English, which
began as a creative outlet, and history, to satisfy his curiosity about the
world. He also learned about small-town life and snow, and found his wife,
Natalie, by his sophomore year. He now plans to find work in wholesale business
in the <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Reno-Carson</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">City</st1:PlaceType>, <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Nev.</st1:place></st1:State>
area. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-autospace:none'><font size=2 face="Courier New"><span
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>Darlene Harms of Moscow and
formerly <st1:City w:st="on">Pekin</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">North
Dakota</st1:State>, Bonners Ferry and <st1:City w:st="on">Spokane</st1:City>,
will earn her bachelor's in secondary education, and intends to teach special
education after her five-year internship at the Northwest Children's Home in <st1:City
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Lewiston</st1:place></st1:City>.

the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType> of

<p class=MsoNormal style='text-autospace:none'><font size=2 face="Courier New"><span
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>~ Linda J. Morris, a
professor of business and interim associate vice provost for academic and
student affairs, will serve as provost at the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Idaho</st1:PlaceName></st1:place>
for an interim appointment. "Dr. Morris has held many academic and
leadership assignments during her 30-year career at the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Idaho</st1:PlaceName></st1:place>,
and thus brings a wealth of significant experience, perspective and
accomplishment to this current assignment," said President Tim White.
"Linda has demonstrated an ability to be analytical and work openly and
collegially with many campus constitutiences constituencies. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-autospace:none'><font size=2 face="Courier New"><span
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>She embraces a coordinated,
strategic and decentralized approach to decision making and action and has been
involved in making difficulty and timely decisions and taking actions."
Provost Brian Pitcher's last day at UI is in early January; he and Morris will
spend the next two weeks working on the transition in leadership. She will
assume her new responsibilities on Jan. 10, and will serve until summer 2005,
at which time a national search for this position is scheduled to be concluded.
Morris joined UI in January 1974 and has worked with many academic units. She
is a professor of business with an extensive list of publications, teaching
awards and committee work. She served as director of the Office of
Multicultural Affairs at UI from 1994 to 1997.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

reception to create a support network for students, faculty, staff and
community members with friends and family members in the military deployed
overseas. "Because most military units are deployed out of Spokane or
Lewiston, students, staff and faculty may not have a lot of local support or
realize that many UI community members are dealing with similar issues,"
said Casandra Byington, a Civic Education Project - agency & and community
