font-family:Arial'>As we go to the polls next Tuesday, I want to share a
success story that speaks to the quality and enthusiasm of our students.
Members of the ASUI Civic Engagement Board sponsored voter registration about
three times a week this fall starting in early September and running until the
registration deadline earlier this month. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'>Their goal was to register 1,000 new voters - very
ambitious. By the time they were finished, they had registered more than 1,100
students who previously had not been registered! In fact, the drive was so
successful that student Megan Thompson, a journalism major from Hayden,
received an all-expenses-paid trip to <st1:City w:st="on">Washington</st1:City>,
<st1:State w:st="on">D.C.</st1:State> from the United States Student
Association for further training and to share her successes on the <st1:City
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Moscow</st1:place></st1:City> campus with other
student leaders from around the nation. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

font-family:Arial'>At a time when low voter turnout is an issue for our nation,
I find great hope in the energy and interest of our student body. Please take

w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Idaho</st1:PlaceName></st1:place>:<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'>~ The Department of Architecture has passed its
accreditation review with the highest of marks, according to its new chair,
Wendy McClure. "We have been granted the maximum, six-year term of accreditation,"
said McClure, "And we met more student performance criteria than ever, 36
out of 37." The National Architectural Accrediting Board praised several
aspects of the UI program. The team recognized that "The architecture program
benefits from having a cohesive faculty whose commitment is well understood and
appreciated by the students." <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

font-family:Arial'>~ Ed Souza, professor of plant breeding and genetics in the <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">College</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Agricultural</st1:PlaceName></st1:place> and Life Sciences, has been
named a Fellow of the Crop Science Society of America. Souza, based at the
Aberdeen Research and <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Extension</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">Center</st1:PlaceType>, directs wheat breeding and genetics research
in southern <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Idaho</st1:place></st1:State>.
He conducts research on wheat improvement and management and has released 19
spring and winter wheat cultivars since joining the UI faculty in 1988. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

font-family:Arial'>~ The Center on Disabilities and Human Development within
the <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">College</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Education</st1:PlaceName>
has won a third federal grant in a matter of months to serve <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">Idaho</st1:place></st1:State> families with disabilities. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'>The latest comes from the Administration on Developmental
Disabilities and provides $1.25 million over five years to establish, monitor
and evaluate a one-stop family resource center in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">Lewiston</st1:place></st1:City> that opens mid-November. Families
with a member who has a developmental disability will receive the services. The
goal is to enable those in rural areas to live at home and receive community
support. The center also recently received two other federal grants - one for
youth with hearing and vision loss; another to increase representation of
people with disabilities in post-secondary education.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
