<P>A COALITION of small leftist political groups today sued US President George
W. Bush and other American government officials for the abuses against prisoners
at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.<BR><BR>The suit was filed at the Santiago
Court of Appeals, which did not immediately decide whether it will accept to
hear it.
<P>Filing the suit were the Communist Party, the Humanist Party and Leftist
Revolutionary Movement.
<P>Also mentioned in the suit were Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of
State Colin Powell, Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and former Iraq
Administrator Paul Bremer.
<P>"We want Bush to be questioned when he comes here" in November for the
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation council summit, said lawyer Juan Enrique
Prieto.
<P></P>"According to international law, Bush is not protected by immunity as a
chief of state, because the crimes at the prison were crimes against mankind,"
Mr Prieto said. "Those crimes violated the Geneva Convention and the Convention
Against Torture, which both the United States and Chile have subscribed."
