font-family:Arial'>As I mentioned last week, the accreditation team from the
Northwest Commission for Colleges and Universities commended the <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Idaho</st1:PlaceName></st1:place> on a number of fronts. For me,
however, the “goosebump” moment came when the team specifically
recognized the faculty and staff for their dedication to this institution, and
their strong commitment to improving student education and learning and a high
level of scholarship and research. President Jay Gogue, who chaired the team,
went on to say, Their performance in these areas is especially noteworthy
during a period of uncertainty.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'>I am sometimes asked upon what I base my optimism about the
future of the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType>
of <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Idaho</st1:PlaceName></st1:place>. There are many
things, obviously, but one of the primary ones is the quality of people I see
working at and attending the University. We already have been through much
together in the past three months, and the basis for my hope, optimism and
enthusiasm about this institution and its future has been reaffirmed time and
time again.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

font-family:Arial'>Kristin Beck, a natural resources freshman from <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Seward</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">Alaska</st1:State></st1:place>,
convinced this year's Dad of the Year committee that her dad deserved the honor
"because he has every possible quality that any kid would want in a father."
John Beck, this year’s UI Dad of the Year, won the honor at Saturday's
Dad's Weekend barbecue. A man of many talents, he has worked for the State of <st1:State
w:st="on">Alaska</st1:State> in Bristol Bay, the National Park Service in <st1:City
w:st="on">Skagway</st1:City>, <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Ketchikan</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Community College</st1:PlaceType>, as a teacher for <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Alaska</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Vocational</st1:PlaceName>

in Seward, Industries Instructor at Spring Creek Correctional Facility and is

font-family:Arial'>Justice for All: Are We Fulfilling the Pledge?" is the
topic of the College of Law's annual Bellwood Lecture, to be delivered by
Helaine M. Barnett, president of Americas legal services program for the
poor. Her talk is at 4 p.m. (PDT), Thursday, Oct. 21, in the SUB Ballroom on
the <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Moscow</st1:place></st1:City>
campus. Doors open at 3 p.m. The event traditionally attracts an overflow
crowd, so seating is on a first-come basis. The lecture also will be telecast
live to Boise, 5 p.m. (MDT), in UI Boise Classroom B-2, 800 Park Blvd. Barnett
will focus on three decades of federally funded civil legal service
accomplishments, difficulties and future challenges, including adequacy of
funding, issues of program quality and limitations on services. Legal Services
Corporation funds local legal aid programs for Americans unable to afford
representation when facing a critical legal problem. LSC currently receives
$335.3 million annually from Congress to fund 143 grantees that, together,
serve the civil legal needs of poor Americans in every <st1:country-region
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">U.S.</st1:place></st1:country-region> county.
While this serves more than 43 million people, the program addresses less than
20 percent of those in need, Barnett told Congress last May. A growing number
of homeless, indigents and those below the poverty line also need legal
advocacy. Barnett was named in January to the top legal services position by
the Legal Services Corporation Board of Directors, appointed by the <st1:country-region
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">U.S.</st1:place></st1:country-region> president.
The LSC, a nonprofit organization created and funded by Congress, supports 158
independent legal aid programs around the nation, including <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">Idaho</st1:place></st1:State>.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
