this month under the direction of its 16th president, Tim White. White kicks
off the school year Sunday, Aug. 22, with the traditional Vandal Walk and
President's Barbecue on the North Kibbie Field. As university administrators serve
the new students dinner, everyone will learn the Vandal fight song - including
White. Fall semester classes begin Monday, Aug. 23, with an estimated
enrollment of nearly 13,000 students expected to take classes at UI sites
throughout the state, according to UI's enrollment management office.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-autospace:none'><font size=2 face="Courier New"><span
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-autospace:none'><font size=2 face="Courier New"><span
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>~ Shubhangi Prabhudesai, a
UI graduate student, won the outstanding graduate student presentation award,
and Julia Williams, a UI junior, won the outstanding undergraduate poster
competition during the Idaho biomedical research conference at Idaho State
University in Pocatello last week. The conference was sponsored by the
Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network, which includes UI, ISU and <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Boise</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">State</st1:PlaceType>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>. In announcing
the award winners, Idaho BRIN Director Mike Laskowski said he was impressed by
the quality of the students' efforts. "The quality of these students'
efforts is comparable to or better than what I've seen at national scientific
meetings. And that includes work by faculty members," he said. Sixty-nine
student researchers from throughout <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Idaho</st1:place></st1:State>
attended the conference. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-autospace:none'><font size=2 face="Courier New"><span
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>Nearly 90 scientists also
attended the program, which highlighted biomedical research in <st1:State
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Idaho</st1:place></st1:State>. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

the lab of UI zoology Professor Deb Stenkamp, received a $1,000 award.
Undergraduate winner Williams of Moscow, a UI microbiology and molecular
biology major, spent the summer working in the laboratory of Jill Johnson,
assistant professor of microbiology, molecular biology and biochemistry. More

of pomology in the Department of Plant, Soil and Entomological Sciences, has
received the Golden Apple Award from the American Pomological Society (APS) for
his outstanding service as president of that society. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-autospace:none'><font size=2 face="Courier New"><span
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>The award was presented to
Fallahi at the 156th APS Annual Conference in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City
w:st="on">Austin</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">Texas</st1:State></st1:place>.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-autospace:none'><font size=2 face="Courier New"><span

style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>~ Michael, '73, '75 and
Carol Hunter recently made a $20,000 gift to UI as part of their $100,000
commitment to the J.A. Albertson Building Campaign. The Michael T. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-autospace:none'><font size=2 face="Courier New"><span
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"'>Hunter Conference Room is
designated in the building to honor their gift. Hunter was president of Sigma
Alpha Epsilon, was elected to the ASUI Senate, was a member of Blue Key and
Silver Lance, served as an assistant to Professor Bob Clark, and worked as a
bartender at Mort's while he was a student. Hunter has spent most of his career
holding positions of leadership with energy and natural gas corporations. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face="Courier New"><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:"Courier New"'>More recently, he was president of Lone Star
Pipeline Company and vice chairman of ENSERCH Processing, Inc. In 2003, Hunter
and three partners formed Estrella Energy, LP in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City
w:st="on">Dallas</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">Texas</st1:State></st1:place>.
The partnership is committed to the acquisition, construction and management of
