font-family:Arial'>~ Incoming UI President Tim White officially assumed his new
responsibilities on Monday and has spent much of the week meeting with
university faculty and staff, touching base with the Vision and Resources Task
Force and unpacking boxes. The Idaho Board of Education/UI Board of Regents
selected White, formerly provost at <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Oregon</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">State</st1:PlaceType> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>,
as UI's 16th president last February. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'>"It will take some time to get settled in completely,
but <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Idaho</st1:place></st1:State>
already is starting to feel like home for us," White said. "I am very
glad to be here, and my wife, Karen, and I are looking forward to meeting
members of the university community in <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Moscow</st1:place></st1:City>
and around the state." President White and his family were scheduled to
attend the Ada County Vandal Boosters' Governor's Gala on Thursday. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

works in electric power engineering Aug. 8-10, in the UI Student Union
Building. This forum is an opportunity for 67 students, 30 faculty and 14
industry engineers to share results of their work, discuss the activities of
their colleagues and publish their technical findings. Students and researchers
are coming from the <st1:country-region w:st="on">U.S.</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region
w:st="on">Canada</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Mexico</st1:country-region>,
South America, Europe, Southwest Asia and <st1:place w:st="on">East Asia</st1:place>.
Keynote speaker is Wayne H. Litzenberger, Bonneville Power Administration. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'>Ed Schweitzer, CEO of Schweitzer Engineering Labs in <st1:City
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Pullman</st1:place></st1:City> and an expert in
electrical power systems protection and automation, will speak following a
group tour of his facilities.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

font-family:Arial'>"Stability and deregulated economics have received much
attention in the national news in the past few years," said Herb Hess, one
of the UI organizers. "Renewable energy is always important, particularly
in the West. And, UI students have studied about the East Coast blackout of '03
and the electricity markets." The conference is held annually at a
university with a strong, growing electric power systems engineering program.
The past three years, the sponsoring universities were <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City
w:st="on">University of Missouri-Rolla</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">Arizona</st1:State></st1:place>
State, and Texas A&M. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;

font-family:Arial'>~ Charles L. (Chuck) Peterson, a pioneer in biodiesel fuels
research and former chair of the Biological and Agricultural Engineering
Department, has been named interim dean of engineering. "Chuck is an
accomplished administrator and faculty member with deep roots in the <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">College</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Engineering</st1:PlaceName></st1:place>," said Provost Brian
Pitcher. Peterson began transitioning into the position Aug. 1. He will
continue in this role until the position can be filled. A national search
currently is underway, and the university expects a new dean will be named fall
semester.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;

font-family:Arial'>~ As many as 1,600 students living and learning in UI's nine
sororities and 18 fraternities earned a collective 3.11 grade point average
during spring semester, according to their adviser in the Office of the Dean of
Students. This compares to the 3.08 grade-point-average for all undergraduate
students on the UI campus last semester, said Cori Hammock, Greek adviser. The
all-sorority collective grade average was 3.26; all-fraternity average was
2.99. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
