Of course this is just a political game being played with taxpayer's dollars and federal government time wasted for the benefit of the Republican party's reelection effort. The Republican party did not really want the amendment banning gay marriage to pass the US Congress in the first place, and knew very well it would never become law. They just wanted to bolster their support by the right wing religious conservatives who are a critical part of their political base with a strong statement against gay marriage, while not alienating the more moderate voters who might think Bush INC. (Nader was on the mark to call the Bush campaign a corporation running for president) went too far if a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage actually passed. <BR>
