There's still one month left in this year's Danger Season, and for western
states, it's already been one of the hottest and driest summers on record.
California, for instance, has had its driest year in the last *century*,
putting all 58 counties under a drought emergency.1

Thankfully, federal lawmakers *finally* took action on climate by passing
the Inflation Reduction Act, but we need them and our state lawmakers to do
even more to help communities become more resilient to the impacts of
global warming... we need your continued support to do just that.

As the world warms, people across the globe will continue to face daunting
new challenges, on a scale never experienced by modern humanity. *Worsening
droughts, for instance, will lead to crop failure, making access to corn,
wheat, and other staples less stable, which in turn will lead to higher
costs and food shortages, disproportionately impacting people already
living in poverty.*2

UCS is already working to put science and people at the forefront of
federal policies that can protect our food and farms. The Federal Farm Bill
is *the* major piece of legislation in this country that shapes our food
and agriculture system. *The bill is up for renewal next year, and we must
ensure that lawmakers let science drive solutions to reduce carbon
emissions, buffer farmland from floods and drought, protect farm workers
from extreme heat, and stop Big Food corporations from perpetuating unfair
and unsustainable practices.*

This is about more than just food prices. This is about the health and
wellbeing of our communities—especially people of color and those living in
extreme poverty, who are most at risk if lawmakers don't prioritize
equitable and just food and climate policies.
