[Vision2020] Fwd: Passing of Ghazi

This is a great loss and a surprise. I've been communicating with him
regularly and his only issue appeared to be a successful recovery from
bladder cancer.
Ghazi and I were on the 3rd floor Admin for decades, but I only became
close to him when his sons decided to major in philosophy. The eldest Asif
is a professor at Princeton and has an international reputation in
neurobiology and psychology.
Ghazi's CV is impressive with dozens of articles in nearly all areas of
economics with a focus on economic history. He was devoted to showing that
Christians in the Middle Ages and our founding thinkers were influenced by
Islamic thought.
Our friendship deepened considerably after 9/11, when I resolved to know
more about Islam. Ghazi showered me with books and articles, more than I
was able to read. I started writing columns on Islamophobia and two of them
can be found at webpages.uidaho.edu/ngier/CivilRights.htm and more can be
found at nfgier.com (search Islam Muslim).
None of this work could have been done without Ghazi's encouragement and
bibliography. Our closest collaboration was on Vasco da Gama, hero to the
Portuguese but hated in India because of his slaughter of Hindus, Muslims,
and even Christians because they were not Roman Catholics.
Ghazi will be sorely missed. Condolences to his lovely wife and three
children.

A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they
shall never sit in.

-Greek proverb

“Enlightenment is man’s emergence from his self-imposed immaturity.
Immaturity is the inability to use one’s understanding without guidance
from another. This immaturity is self- imposed when its cause lies not in
lack of understanding, but in lack of resolve and courage to use it without
guidance from another. Sapere Aude! ‘Have courage to use your own
understand-ing!—that is the motto of enlightenment.
