Hi Gary,

I looked at contemporary Main Street pictures in the UI's Ott collection.
My best guess is that the poles on the east side are newer (raw wood?).
Poles on both sides appear to have a painted or metal collar six feet high

The postcard that Tom posted corresponds to a photo in the Ott Collection
labeled "about 1900, before the street was paved in 1912." Modern luxuries,
eh?
