> July 1, 2021 (Moscow, Idaho) —  Fourth of July festivities are around the corner. We’ve seen local officials in different parts of Idaho and Washington place additional restrictions or offer recommendations regarding the use of personal fireworks in light of the dangers presented in their community.  After many conversations over the past several days with City of Moscow Fire Chief, Brian Nickerson, Idaho Department of Lands, Moscow Police, and other stakeholders, the current position within the City of Moscow regarding fireworks is that we have not reached the level of risk requiring a ban on the personal use of the non-aerial fireworks that are permissible under Idaho Code, and to focus on education and encouragement to be a responsible citizen and utilize safe practices. While the temperatures this week have been high, that is only one component to the overall fire conditions for our city. This week, the Idaho Department of Lands has changed fire danger conditions for the Northern Uplands Region, which is expansive and includes the City of Moscow, almost daily from Moderate to Extremely High and as a result of the lower temperatures today and the rain last night, Fire Chief Nickerson anticipates the fire danger level will lower. Chief Nickerson reminds us that there are other contributing factors that determine the level of threat for wildland incidents including temperature, wind, humidity and fuel moisture, to name a few.

> Aerial fireworks are illegal in the State of Idaho, and create the biggest risk for fire. Use of illegal fireworks is a misdemeanor and punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and up to six months in jail. Altering fireworks is an infraction and punishable by a fine of $100.  Parents or guardians of a minor shall be liable for damages caused by the use of fireworks by their minor.  Damage to persons or property resulting from the use of any fireworks can result in financial restitution, fines, and/or other civil lawsuits and criminal prosecution. Do not be negligent, know the law, and follow safe practices when utilizing fireworks.
