Moscow bridge completion not without super effort

At first glance you might not recognize them as superheroes, but the members of Citizens for a Livable Community are a mighty force! That grassroots organization warrants the lion’s share of credit for Moscow’s new bicycle-pedestrian bridge over Paradise Creek at Third Street and Mountain View Road in Moscow. To be sure, it has taken cooperation among policymakers and stakeholders, but without CLC’s doggedness and diplomacy, that project almost certainly would not have been realized in its present form at the present time. In case the message gets lost amidst pomp and ceremony at the ribbon-cutting on June 29, here’s a little history.

The CLC has been at this for more than a decade. They have persisted through political opposition and economic recession. In 2005, they convinced then-mayor Marshall Comstock to scrap plans for a car bridge there altogether, an action a Daily News editor called “by far the most brilliant move of (his) mayoral career,” (Our Vew: Scrapping bridge project was good idea; action proves city of Moscow listened to what public was saying ). Lack of available funding undoubtedly played a part too. Nonetheless, when economic circumstances improved and the complexion of councils changed, the specter of a motorized traffic conduit arose again and again. Throughout, the CLC prioritized Moscow’s collective good above expediency and inspired academics and transportation professionals to embrace their vision to put people first. To see the project realized is vindication.

It is emblematic of the value our community places on pedestrian safety, walkability and bikability, and protection of cherished places and activities, which would be jeopardized by a car bridge.

They might not be dressed in superhero costumes at the ribbon-cutting (or maybe they will), but if you see an unassuming person in the crowd, with a few battle scars and a smile that reaches from one side of Paradise Creek to the other, be sure to say thanks and maybe offer a hug worthy of a superhero.

This plan was proposed at the September 10th, 2005 City Repair workshop, sponsored by the Paradise Path Task Force and developed in direct consultation with the surrounding neighbors.
