Letter: Troy Blocked Research

In 2016, Rep. Caroline Nilsson Troy voted with the majority to ban embryonic stem cell research in Idaho.

Use of embryonic stem cells for research involves the destruction of blastocysts formed from laboratory-fertilized human eggs.

It would seem that, for those who believe life begins at conception, this is essentially destroying a human life. Unfortunately, the banning of such research could cause scientists who are interested in this research to move to other states, and inhibits the search for cures for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other diseases so harmful to individuals and families.

I understand that there are those who are deeply committed to the notion that life begins at conception. However, not all religions hold that belief. Not all individuals hold that belief.

Those who insist on enacting their specific beliefs into law restrict the freedom of others.
