Obituary: Nels Peterson, 46, of Moscow

Nels Peterson, 46, of Moscow, died Wednesday afternoon at the Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene.

Nels was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer in early December and had been receiving chemotherapy in attempts to halt the disease's progression.

Nels was born April 30, 1971, to Gloria Peterson and the late Robert Peterson in Milwaukee, Wis. Nels grew up in the greater Milwaukee area, graduating from Greendale High School in 1989. He attended and graduated from St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis., in 1993. Following graduation Nels moved to Moscow and engaged in graduate studies at the University of Idaho and the University of Montana.

Nels was an avid drummer and played locally with Henry C. and the Willards as well as the Moscow Volunteer Peace Band. He also played hockey throughout his childhood and adult life. He played locally for the Gem State Stars and in the Old Timers league.

Nels was the owner of the Panhandle Artisan Bread Co. and a strong advocate for local businesses. His bread nourished the people of the Palouse for over nine years. His humility, generosity and kindness made lasting friends and uplifted all who were blessed to make his acquaintance.

Nels is survived by his mother, Gloria Peterson Jones, and brother, Erik Peterson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Moscow Food Bank or the Palouse Ice Rink.

Funeral services will take place 11 a.m. Thursday, March 29, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Moscow. The burial will occur at noon at the Moscow Cemetery.
