Carl Norman Westberg Jr., a longtime Moscow resident, died June 25, 2018, at Good Samaritan Village in Moscow. He was 67.

Westberg's life bridged the spoken and written word. His voice was familiar to radio listeners around the Northwest. Others knew him as a staff member at the University of Idaho Library, where he was a mainstay of the Inter-Library Loan office for more than two decades.

Born Dec. 20, 1950, in Moscow to Carl and Mary Dunne Westberg, he attended Russell Elementary School and Whitworth Junior High (now the 1912 Center). He graduated from Moscow High School in 1969. He attended the University of Idaho for four semesters, studying radio-television, then enrolled in broadcasting school in San Francisco.

Westberg worked as an announcer at KRPL in Moscow and at radio stations in Pocatello and Great Falls, Mont. For two years, he co-hosted a popular program, "Brother Carl and Auntie Establishment," on KRFP (Radio Free Moscow), which combined music and social commentary.

His diverse musical tastes ranged from classical to 1970s progressive rock. An avid reader, Westberg enjoyed mysteries, science fiction and alien conspiracy theories. He enjoyed watching PBS, including the revived science series, "Cosmos." He rooted for the Idaho Vandals, the Seattle Mariners and the Seattle Seahawks.

Carl enjoyed a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, who admired his sense of gratitude and wicked sense of humor. He cherished his time with family and his extended family, happily sharing coffee or beer with people of widely divergent political, religious and cultural views. A solitary figure strolling the streets of Moscow, he cherished his memories of places and the people he met on his walks. Carl adored his two indoor cats, Vinnie and Luigi, as well as a semi-feral neighborhood cat known as Mo.

Westberg was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church of Moscow and was grateful for the companionship of his St. Mark's friends during his final illness.

Carl is survived by his brother, Larry (Carmen) Westberg, of Boise; his sisters, Karen Westberg and Regina (Dennis) Cochrane, of Moscow; many cousins and several nieces. His parents died previously.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Sunday, July 29, 2018, at the Burnt Ridge Cemetery near Troy. A memorial gathering, to which all friends are invited, will follow at 1 p.m. at the picnic shelter in East City Park, First and Hayes streets in Moscow. Food and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided. The family suggests memorials to the Humane Society of the Palouse, P.O. Box 8847, Moscow.
