Letter: Third and Paradise
Anyone living in and enjoying the community of Moscow should consider reading the online iPetition:
"Moscow City Council - Halt 3rd Street Bridge Plans”
https://tinyurl.com/3rdstreetbridge
The online petition allows participants to sign online and to post comments explaining specific concerns.
Moscow residents remain concerned that members of the City Council, determined to add a motor vehicle bridge, hastily amended documents and voted on this matter without following a process enabling differing perspectives to weigh into the decision. As many residents know, this bridge has been a hotly contested idea since its inception, and concerned residents have, in the past, managed to delay these plans in favor of constructing a much less expensive bridge for safe pedestrian and bicycle passage.
Since four main arterials connecting west-to-east Moscow already exist, concerned residents wonder why we would allot even more of the public's financial resources to adding a bridge and subsequent traffic-calming infrastructure. After all, Moscow residents have asked the city to consider many other important needs, such as improvements to the ice rink to increase children's winter recreational opportunities and building and improving law enforcement facilities. We find this hasty, undemocratic process financially irresponsible.
Alternatives exist. From noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, all community members are invited to attend "Third and Paradise Your Thoughts?" an interactive design workshop at the 1912 Center. Ayad Rahmani, Washington State University associate professor of architecture, and Randall Teal, program head for the University of Idaho's Architecture and Interior Design, will facilitate this event.
