Letter: Bridge a community issue

Two recent letters to the Daily News ("Sky will not fall because of Third Street bridge," April 6, and "Calming device for Third Street," March 19) assert that opponents of a motor vehicle bridge on Third Street are acting out of a "not-in-my-backyard" motivation. These writers may not be aware that 400 people from all over Moscow have signed petitions against a motor bridge and for a pedestrian-bicycle only bridge. Only a small percentage of signors live in the affected area. Opponents are saying instead "not in our precious, irreplaceable, historic core of town" and "not in our major pedestrian park and community center part of town." This is a community issue, not a neighborhood issue.

The sky doesn't fall when a residential area is cut by an arterial with heavy car and truck traffic, but neighborhood connectivity and pedestrian use is reduced. You seldom see families, children, elderly and dog walkers out enjoying a stroll on East Sixth Street or West A Street. The City 2011 Urban D Traffic Count listed 8,368 vehicles per day on Third Street near City Hall. When campaigning last fall, Mayor Bill Lambert told people there wouldn't be many more cars on Third Street when the bridge is built. But that is wishful thinking. It sounds like the letter writers can't wait to drive their cars and trucks over that bridge and past Lena Whitmore Elementary School.

I would ask them and others to stop and consider before adding to the traffic on East Third. The community at risk is your own.
