“Race in the Age of Trump”
A special presentation by Dr. Rev. Thandeka
1912 Center, Sunday April 15th, 2:30 pm with reception to follow
Hurt people hurt people. Injured souls injure souls. Racism, ethnic hatred, and religious warfare could not take hold within us if our hearts were not already broken and turned outward seeking revenge.
“Race in the Age of Trump” traces the history of racial identity-formation in America, showing “how racial identities were ‘invented’ in America to keep both blacks and whites in their place.” The lecture provides an alternative to shame- and blame-based anti-racism programs. Insights from the brain science of emotions will be used for constructing New Race Work in the Age of Trump.
The Rev. Dr. Thandeka is a Unitarian Universalist theologian, journalist, Emmy award-winning television producer, and congregational consultant who created and leads the Belief initiative for progressive congregations.
This talk is part of a larger celebration of life for Jaak Panksepp (6/5/43 — 4/18/17) was a world-renowned neuroscientist who pioneered the academic study of emotions. He spent the last 10 years of his life as a professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University, where he held the Bernice and Joseph Baily Endowed Chair in Animal Well-Being Science.
