Letter: More responsive council needed

Why are Mayor Bill Lambert and our City Council members in so much of a hurry to build a Third Street motor bridge that they would try to get the design consultant contracted by Election Day without any plans for traffic routing and calming and no outreach to the community? They know it will lead to more than 1,000 additional cars driving past Lena Whitmore Elementary School and many, many more cars driving on already busy Third Street past Moscow High School, 1912 Center and East City Park.

Mayor Lambert says it is a safety issue, but the motor bridge will create many more safety issues than it will solve.

Councilor Gina Taruscio says we need more connectivity, but White, Harold, Seventh, Sixth, D, B, and F streets already provide connectivity between Mountain View Road and destinations to the west.

Councilor Walter Steed says the bridge will save six blocks of driving, but cars will still have to travel north or south on Mountain View instead of Hayes depending on their destination. The only cars that can go straight east from the bridge are those driving to Harvest Hills housing development that is yet to be constructed.

Piecemeal planning to spend a half million dollars for a motor bridge before providing a complete plan for safety and traffic flow is irresponsible and wasteful governance and our citizens deserve better. Requests for a community discussion of this matter made through over a year of testimonies at City Council, petitions from throughout the city, and citizen letters have consistently been ignored by the mayor and the council.

I recommend voting for Linda Pall, Brandy Sullivan and Anne Zabala, all of whom will work to provide us with more responsive, responsible and collaborative city government that will include citizens in decisions on important community matters. Vote!
