Letter: United team or one-track mind?
Moscow's incumbent mayor and council boast about being a "united team." Their unidimensional approach to governance, manifest by the now infamous Third Street Bridge, threatens one of Moscow's historic neighborhoods, safety of cyclists, people with disabilities and pedestrians of all ages - and the economic vitality of downtown, forcing more commuter traffic through its heart.
We've watched this "united" mayor and council disrespect citizens and ignore opposing views. The mayor audaciously told citizens who wanted to be heard at a council meeting to "be quiet and sit down." He and councilors ignored petitions signed by nearly 400 residents who oppose plans to install a motor vehicle bridge on Third Street at Paradise Creek.
Why wouldn't elected officials schedule public meetings to air plans and invite comments? Who do they think they serve? Instead, united, they've ignored opposing voices that include a University of Idaho emeritus professor of urban theory, who has tried to share (within the mayor's three minutes maximum open mic time) best practices, warning against precisely what Moscow's government plans to do - make Third Street a major traffic corridor, endangering school children and marring community treasures.
Maybe, they are "united." Or, maybe they are just closed-minded and "authoritarian."
I'm not willing to take that chance. Are the voters?
Vote for candidates who will listen to all of us - Linda Pall for mayor, Brandy Sullivan and Anne Zabala for City Council.
In a very real way, the future of Moscow is in the voters' hands.
