Brief: Man beaten up by woman he was trying to attack sentenced

An 18-year-old Pullman man who was beaten up by the woman he was attempting to choke was sentenced to more than a year in a half in prison after he pleaded guilty to a felony burglary charge Tuesday in the Whitman County Superior Court.

Juan Mendoza Ortiz was arrested by the Pullman Police Department in early May for his failed home invasion at an apartment on College Hill.

Ortiz had followed a 20-year-old Washington State University student on foot to her apartment, forced his way inside and tried to strangle her. The woman was able to overpower him by putting him in a headlock and hitting him on the head several times. He then fled from the apartment and was arrested by PPD moments later.
