Here is an indication of part of the local impact of the Oval Office Orders released over the weekend.

One might expect that WSU will have similar impacts, and that local businesses with international contracts and travel commitments may need to address these orders' intersections with their businesses.

Statement on Immigration Executive Order

With students, faculty and staff from every state and nearly 80 foreign countries, the University of Idaho has long held our doors open to the world. An international perspective serves the educational experience, stimulates innovation and discovery, and builds bridges that bring valuable understanding and connection.

The recent federal executive order limiting travel from certain countries — Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia — may have an impact on the ability of some of our community members, including students, faculty and staff members, and families, to freely enter the United States. Within our Vandal family, we are aware of at least 20 students and several faculty and staff who may be impacted by this order. We will be reaching out and advising them not to travel abroad until we know more about the specific practices that will be implemented.

We remain committed to the core values of inclusion and diversity from which we have always drawn great strength. International students, faculty and staff members have long been a part of the University of Idaho story and reflect our values since our founding on this day 128 years ago. They remain essential for us to excel as Idaho’s leader in research and student success. We respect the extensive and diverse community of people from varied backgrounds and beliefs. Diversity brings strength to the many parts of our mission — in our classrooms, in our laboratories, in our workspaces and wherever we gather to think, learn and create.

I share the concerns university officials and others have expressed about this recent development, and recognize the effect it can have on the educational experiences of our students, the work of our talented faculty and staff, and the security and well-being of all those affected, while also recognizing the need for following federal immigration and travel processes. We anticipate further developments as this issue evolves over the coming days and weeks. We will continue to watch closely and provide new information as it becomes available.

If you have questions about student issues, please contact <http://www.uidaho.edu/current-students> Dean of Students Blaine Eckles at 208-885-6757. If faculty or staff have questions, please call Susie Bender, executive director of <http://www.uidaho.edu/academic-affairs/ipo> International Programs, at 208-885-2539.
