Not particularly, but nefarious individuals have been attempting to
place themselves between users and their financial information ever
since financial information has been transmitted via the Internet. A
Nigerian connection is not required.
You're marginally safer if you communicate financially via channels you
control through threads you initiate. If they call you, hang up. If
you need to talk with your financial people, you call them.
On the other hand, no one is really safe anymore. Obama just signed off
on new rules that allow domestic law enforcement to receive NSA data
RAW, essentially without warrant. This is a continuation of the
planning that must have been done before the 11 September 2001 event,
which resulted in, among other things, massive changes in civil rights
and information laws within just a few days after the event.
I would like to think that a new Cabinet-level department might be able
to be created, followed by some federal government information and spy
agency reorganizations, that would allow some greater degree of public
oversight with respect to these types of laws. However, bringing a
better level of order out of the covert chaos, and returning the
constitution to its citizens, at the moment at least, appears to be a
larger challenge than those nominally in charge appear able to grasp and
comprehend. Worse, it's a challenge they don't want to comprehend. <[
