Steve A. Smith will present “My Fake News is Your Truth – Welcome to the Twilight (Zone) of the American Press” at the League of Women Voters, Moscow forum 7-8 p.m. Wednesday (March 1 ) in the 1912 Center Great Room, 412 E. Third St., Moscow.

A few months ago, it was thought the solution to the problem of fake news was as simple as developing tools to discern truth from falsity in news delivered in print, broadcast or digital form. But now there's a new term for falsity – “alternative facts” – and a world where truth is defined as information that agrees with a person’s political inclinations. How do Americans cope? And how can American journalism survive?

Smith is clinical assistant professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Media at the University of Idaho.

A veteran news professional of 38 years, Smith last served as editor of The Spokesman-Review, the daily newspaper in Spokane.

He is a graduate of the Northwestern University Newspaper Management Center Advanced Executive Program and a mid-career development program at Duke University. He holds an M.A. in communication from The Ohio State University where he was a Kiplinger fellow and a B.S. in journalism from the University of Oregon.

The public is invited to attend. Beer and Wine will be available for purchase by those 21 years of age or older.
