Having a gun for protection is not cowardice. There were a lot of Negros that carried guns. Ida B. Wells was one. The Deacons fore Defense were another. They said "If you shoot a us, we shoot back"  The KKK were instrumental in disarming the Negros. They wanted to be able to bully them at will with out fear of retaliation .
