Some might speculate that international pressure on various issues, like
global warming, will moderate Trump's irrational extremism. Trump's
campaign promise to "cancel" the Paris climate agreement, and his claim
that global warming is a "hoax," are among the most disturbing aspects of
the pending Trump presidency: "Donald Trump would 'cancel' Paris climate
deal" 27 May 2016 http://www.bbc.com/news/election-us-2016-36401174
"Yes, Donald Trump did call climate change a Chinese hoax" June 3rd, 2016
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2016/jun/03/hillary-clinton/yes-donald-trump-did-call-climate-change-chinese-h/

But as the Time article indicates at bottom, France's president Hollande
takes public exception to Trump's position on global warming.

This could backfire, given Trump's statements indicating the US may
withdraw from a variety of international agreements, to put the "US first,"
coupled with his apparent obstinate personal arrogance. His political base
would regard a reversal of his rejection of global warming as an egregious
betrayal. Millions of US voters who supported Trump have been misled
regarding the overwhelming science indicating global warming is a major
problem. They also believe it is a "scientific hoax," a "liberal or
socialist plot to undermine liberty and capitalism" a "a UN sponsored plan
for world government that undermines US sovereignty," etc.

Trump may thus react to international pressure to address global warming
with even more fervor against doing anything about the problem. Read about

polarization: "Boomerangs versus Javelins: The Impact of Polarization on
Climate Change Communication" 7 June 2016 Jack Zhou, *Nicholas School of
