Great picture, Tom. From the ladies hats in the crowd, I would think in the
1910s. By 1920, the big hats seen were out.

Permeal French started Campus Day in May 1910 where volunteers cleaned up
the landscaping on campus and the women danced the Maypole around noon.
According to Keith Peterson in *This Crested Hill,* professional
landscaping gradually took over and Campus Day morphed into a May Fete in
the 20s and 30s, and they elected a May Queen. The May Fete eventually
became an awards ceremony for students held on Mothers Weekend and in 1970
it became Parents Weekend. (Larry Craig was named Outstanding Senior in May
Fete 1967) The last mention I can find of the campus maypole was 1961. The
maypole was revived in 1973 by the beloved Ren Fair.
