PRESS RELEASE
Damaged City Hall Trees to be Removed

September 17, 2015 (Moscow, Idaho) - City of Moscow staff, in consultation with the City of Moscow Tree Commission and University of Idaho Forestry Department, have determined eight Honey Locust trees surrounding City Hall at 206 E Third Street have succumbed to cankers and an infestation of Honey Locust plant bugs.

Trees that require removal show various levels of dieback from 40% to 100%. Pruning of the affected areas of the lesser affected trees has been considered, but due to the level of infestation the trees would be significantly and permanently disfigured and more susceptible to breakage. Adjacent trees are not in danger as healthy trees are able to resist the canker and bugs, the affected trees were in a stressed state an unable to withstand the cankers and bugs.

Trees to be removed are located on the south and west sides of City Hall. Trees are in both the lawn area at City Hall and in the sidewalk well surrounding City Hall. An appropriate replacement plan is being discussed by City officials and plans will be finalized in the spring.

Tree removal will take place on September 28, 2015 during regular business hours. The sidewalk and parking lane on the west side of City Hall will be closed and barricaded/coned-off per City standards for one day during the operation. The south sidewalk will also be closed, but south traffic lanes will remain open. For more information on the City trees, please contact Parks and Facilities Manager Tom Grundin at 208.883.7098.
