Latah Co. Clerk feels Kentucky clerk acted unprofessionally not giving out same-sex marriage licenses

MOSCOW, ID – KLEW News Reporter Alex Cresenti spoke with the Latah County Clerk.

Latah was the first county in the state of Idaho to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Here at the Latah County Courthouse, same-sex couples have been coming to get their marriage licenses ever since the Supreme Court ruling.

The process of going to the county clerk is no different for same-sex couples compared to anyone else. While everything proceeds with ease up here, it is a much different story in Kentucky, with a clerk going to jail after refusing to issue any marriage licenses.

Latah County Clerk Henrianne Westberg says it’s unprofessional.

“When you swear to uphold the law, when you're an elected official, you take that promise to abide by the constitution and that's your job, when you can't do your job you should step down, ” said Westberg.

Before the ruling it was not legal for same-sex couples to get married in Idaho. But ever since then, the county has seen an increase in the amount of marriage licenses issued. 

"The same as it became legal to apply for a same-sex marriage license, we started issuing," said Westberg. 

In fact, this clerk’s office doesn’t know exactly how many marriage licenses have been issued to same-sex couple because, it all goes under the same recording system, gay and straight.
